Veniamin Popov: “Russia should save the Islamic world from the 21st century plague”
“Russia should save the Islamic world from the 21st century plague. We should help all the Muslims,” – declared Veniamin Popov, the head of the Centre for Partnership of Civilizations (MGIMO University, Ministry of Foreign Affairs) in his speech at the all-Russian conference in Kazan “Quran and secular view on the ideological confrontation: traditional Islam and pseudo-religious groups”.
Veniamin Popov thinks that there must be own theological centre in Russia which would allow “not to always look at Kuwait and Saudi Arabia”.
“We have a lot of talented people who are able to give a lead in a range of various aspects. Islam should be up to date. We are living in the 21st century,” – he pointed out. Popov noted that a number of scholars believe that there will be more Muslims than Christians in the world by 2023. Therefore, Islam will become the leading religion as far as the number of its followers are concerned.
“It is obvious that fighting Islamic terrorism can pull together the international community to a certain extent and facilitate relations between Russia and the West which is very important at the present time,” – said the conference guest of honour. He also informed that a series of films about outstanding Muslims will be made in January 2016.
