Russian conditions to settle down relations with Turkey

Russian conditions to settle down relations with Turkey

Russian ambassador to Turkey Andrey Karlov presented the conditions on which the relations between Turkey and Russia will calm down to the Turkish authorities.

According to Aandrey Karlov, Russia sees the way out in the following: first, Ankara should make apology for shooting down the Russian military jet. Secondly, all those involved in the incident should receive punishment. Finally, Turkey should reimburse for the damage. All these aspects are not new at all. Russian authorities expected Ankara to apologize from the very beginning of the situation. The ambassador says that although Turkey tends to express its intention to revive the dialogue and cooperation with Russia, it is not willing to take responsibility for the incident.

It is worth mentioning that the Turkish authorities’ opinion about Russia is quite ambiguous. On the one hand, they seemed to regret about the worsened relations between the two countries. On the other hand, the president of Turkey showed himself as a defender of the Turkish people from the threat represented by the Russian jet shot down on the territory of Syria.

It is unlikely that Turkey will present its apologies under the current conditions. The president of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan will not admit his guilt publicly as this might make his rating slip down. Turkey seems to aim at taking advantage of the conflict so that to improve the situation within the country. Erdogan is planning to turn the country into a presidential republic. Therefore, he needs to win the support of few deputies from the opposition parties of the Turkish parliament. The incident with the shot down jet might lead Erdogan to achieving his dream of becoming a life-long head of Turkey.
