Saudi Arabia is happy about Russia’s withdrawal of troops from Syria
Saudi Arabia is happy about Russia’s decision to withdraw its troops from Syria. Minister of Foreign Affairs Adel al-Jubeir claimed that ar-Riyad finds this decision as a positive step as it will make Bashar Assad make concessions.
Saudi Arabia openly supports the so-called “moderate” opposition of the Syrian opposition which resists the government army under Bashar Assad’s control. Ar-Riyad did not approve of Moscow’s decision to start a military operation in Syria on the 30th of September last year. With Russia being involved in the conflict and supporting Assad, forces distribution has dramatically changed.
“We hope that this will speed up the political process within the Geneva conventions and will make Bashar Assad make concessions. This is extremely important on the way of converting the political system of the country to a different system,” noted Adel al-Jubeir.
Although Russia and Saudi Arabia support opposing parties of the Syrian conflict, they cooperate with each other successfully in other areas. For example, ar-Riyad is willing to buy Russian weapon. Both countries invest into each other’s oil and gas markets. It is worth reminding that some time ago Russia, Saudi Arabia and some other countries decided to freeze oil output. Those in power in these and other countries understand that the demand at the energy market is much less than the supply. This requires cooperation of all the market participants. Negotiations are currently held with Iran which is going to play a significant part at the oil market after the sanctions’ removal.
